What cloud computing means for a company that already has systems
Cloud computing is renting compute, storage and managed services instead of owning a room of servers. SJ Technologies is a UK IT agency. We move and run workloads on AWS and Azure when that is the shorter operational path, not because “the cloud” sounds modern.
Lift-and-shift of a neglected VM is still a neglected VM, only with a better invoice. A migration should say which applications move, which stay, and which will be rewritten because the current shape cannot be operated safely.
Cost, the part most migrations skip
On-demand pricing rewards idle resources with a bill. Reserved capacity, right-sizing, and turning things off in non-production are the unglamorous work. We put budgets and alerts in the same delivery as the first environment, not six months later when finance asks.
If a vendor cannot explain last month’s spend in one page, you do not have a cloud strategy. You have a tab.
Environments that match how you release, not one shared box. Identity and network rules written down, not left as defaults. Backups you have restored, not only scheduled. A named person who can change the account without a hunt.
Security is part of the migration, not a later project
Public buckets, standing admin keys and open databases are still the usual failures. Cloud security is boring configuration: least privilege, logging, encryption at rest and in transit, and a way to revoke access when someone leaves.
We will not migrate production until those controls are in the plan. A cheaper lift that leaves the door open is not cheaper.
How we take cloud work
Discovery of what you run, a written target architecture, a migration sequence that can be rolled back, and operations you can staff. AWS is common in our work; Azure is used when the estate is already there.
If you need cloud computing for an SME product or an internal system, start with the applications and the risk, not with a list of services. We will tell you what to move first.
Work with SJ Technologies
This article is about cloud computing. If that is the work you need, we can scope it in writing as a UK IT agency.
