Routebay · Manchester, UK

We built a tracking app around the scan events the depot already produced: pickup, in transit, out for delivery, and delivered.

About the client

A regional carrier in the North West needed consignees to see where a parcel was, without a phone call to the depot.

Drivers already had a handheld for scans. The gap was a customer-facing track page and a live status the operations desk could trust.

Project overview

We built a tracking app around the scan events the depot already produced: pickup, in transit, out for delivery, and delivered.

The public side is a tracking ID and a map. The operations side is the same events, with a contact path when a stop fails.

Functionality

  • Tracking by consignment ID
  • Live status from handheld scan events
  • Map of the last known scan and ETA where the carrier can give one
  • Operations view of the same history the customer sees
  • Named contact path when a stop fails

Solution

  • A tracking ID opens a live status, an ETA where the carrier can give one, and a simple map of the last known scan.
  • Scan events from the handheld land in the same store the customer page reads. There is not a second spreadsheet for “where is it”.
  • When a delivery needs a person, the app offers a contact path to the desk that owns the round, not a generic inbox.
  • The first release was a mobile web app so drivers and customers did not wait on store review. Native wrappers stay an option in a later scope.

Project results

Consignees can check a shipment without calling the depot.

Operations and the customer see the same scan history.

Failed stops have a named contact path.

A map and ETA only where the carrier can actually support them.

Customer review

“Customers check a tracking ID instead of ringing the depot. Operations sees the same scans, so we are not arguing about two versions of the truth.”

Mr. Matt W., Operations lead, UK
